Here is to the (not) lucky ones

Image
We are lucky. I am lucky.   Just reading now all details out there of what has been going on in Palestine or Israel-Gaza..  But also, just listening to a real life crime/investigation podcast (maybe too much). It is as worrying as it is entertaining. My conclusion is, I’m too preoccupied for small things.. I’m so lucky to be able to go for a walk in the forest each morning and be able to see the mountains and the 4 seasons evolve through the year through my window. It’s so easy to lose perspective of things.  I have mys elf gone in the last months through a period of self-doubt, of wondering if I’m in the right place, if I made the right decision at work, if I should change.. but the fact is, that is a problem for the lucky ones. I’m not saying this is not important.  I’m not saying this should not be important to me.  But, it does rank the issue in a different place when you compare it with other bigger issues like.. am I surviving another day?...

Going back to business trip

It’s been over 2 years and something that I didnt get on a plane for a business trip, trying to figure out what to fit in my small suitcase that will be appropriate for the management meeting I was going to. Packing a small suitcase is normally a challenge, but when you have lost the habit it can be even more difficult. These last 3 days have been great.   I love travelling, going to an airport and walking around in a city that is not my own.   I love the idea of taking some air from those 4 walls in the house… a breather... I think I lost that feeling, but it’s been a great reminder that this is where I’m happy.   Moving around, doing things. I have been working with these guys for the past 2 years.   Putting real bodies to screen faces starts to feel closer to the “old normal”.   And I like that.   It’s funny, because they are almost exactly as I imagined them.   And I know how awkward it can be to find a common theme to talk about over a dinne...

Eternal Ryanair Claim

Dear Ryanair, Ref: QTKLQG, flight FR7613 In June 22 nd 2017, I bought a ticket for my husband and myself to fly with Ryanair from Glasgow to Lisbon.  The purchase was made through Edreams.  This flight that was meant to leave September 10 th 2017 was cancelled.  (A ll details of that experience submitted in the letter attached.) Since cancellation (almost 5 months), I have been completing all possible online claim templates and sending several emails to your company with no successful resolution.  With no successful resolution because the cheque you sent over had been returned by my bank since it was not possible to deposit in Lisbon, only in Ireland where bank operates.  Also, I must say, that the cheque reached my door by luck because the letter was sent over without my apartment door number. I have also been calling to your service line, and the service is very poor and offers no options other than submitting a new different online claim tem...

Adapt or DIE

-- After – unbelievable - +3 years of absence, I have decided to re-take my blog project.  -- Welcome and thank you for taking the time to pass by. This space is where I express my ideas and thoughts around VERY RANDOM TOPICS. Hope you find it interesting and if so OR NOT, please leave me your comments. For those who are first timers here and have no clue of who I am, my name is Ana Mateo.  I was born a long time ago (no need to bring each other’s trash) in the Dominican Republic, place where I spent more than half of my life (start doing the Math OR NOT).  I have been away from home for the last 10 years, first 5 living in Madrid and last 5 living in Lisbon.  So blog posts might be in whatever language I feel like writing... I work for Oracle, a big Computer Technology Corporation, as Business Analyst for an EMEA team that focus on SaaS Implementations done through Partners.  I will explain in depth in another chapter what this real...

Silence

Image
El silencio. Y el tiempo. Pero todo va bien. El trabajo. El amor. La ciudad. Todo va bien. Todo va bien. Cuando nada va mal. Somos felices. Cuando no estamos tristes. La familia. Los amigos. No están presentes. Pero están. El jefe. Los nuevos jefes. Sin más. Cosas nuevas.

Leaving the "Mangú" behind to go abroad

Image
Many people wonder why others leave their hometowns if they have a “confi” bed, a “decent” income, live in “dream countries” with amazing beaches, or whatever that might sound reasonable.  Perhaps because of the need to learn new things, to gain independence, to discover cultures, to start thinking “out-of-the-box” (being the box: your hometown and the people that live there), to break the “path/trend” of doing what culture imposes (being the trend: having kids at age +21 and/or marring, forming a family you don’t truly want at that time). The truth is that, well, there is no good answer to that question as we all leave for our own personal reasons and pursuing different purposes. Us, We (or what I like to call it), the “world travelers” are not a weird human kind.  We are more common than we might think.  We are not more special than others, we just choose a different way of living.  Do we risk more?  Are we really more open minded than...

Lisboa, love story

Image
Lisboa me gusta.

Algunas veces resulta, otras veces no tanto.

Syndrome of the Man Down

Image
No, this post is not about Rihanna's song. It is about us.  You and I. The not social group of people that when in an elevator, in a dinner, in the subway dedicate more time to type through the "smart" than to generate a decent conversation with the ones around us. I am a very proTech person.  I love the fact that I can actually write this post and some people will read it. I love the fact that I can actually call someone or write an email and know that they will answer. I love everything that comes from Technology, even when sometimes it helps me abstract from the world whenever I don't want to socialize. But, does it necessary have to always be there? The man down is this person that during lunch break is anxious to write a whatsapp (reply a message) to someone that has not even written. The man down is this person that needs to confirm through the navigator if what the person in front of him has said is true or not. The man down is this person t...

May 20th 2012

Minutos después empezó Marina and the Diamonds.

Image
In terms of music I am always open to new stuff, this my friends know better.  Recently I have discovered my passion for "Indie".  For those who are not familiar with "Indie", this is like a more alternative way to present the traditional pop rock (personal opinion). A friend proposed me to join a group of his friends to go to the  Vetusta Morla 's concert in Madrid at La Riviera , and this was a great opportunity for me to change my perspective on spanish bands and concerts.  And yes, since I am a very "musical" person, I coudn't refuse going to this live gig. Apparently this was the last concert to be announced because all of the other 4 were already sold out. Lucky for me!  I was able to buy my ticket.  Expectations regarding this event were increasing.  It was the moment for me to start "rehearsing" the set list. Vetusta Morla's singer, Pucho, not only gives the band a solid appearance but his voice gives charm...

Bordeaux

Image
For locations like this is that I declare myself a “French culture lover”.  Actually, I still believe that I should have moved there a while ago and I think I will eventually. Bordeaux is a city in the southwest coast of France with a very high number of students, immigrants and bikes. The grace of this city is not based on its size but on the amount of architecture it has consolidated in such a small space.  Not only amazing to the ones that go for pure tourism – like me - but also to the ones that live there. The journey started a bit late with my arrival at 11pm aprox.  We headed towards the city centre by bus and then Mimi and her friend (A) gave me a “short-night-tour” by railway.  The charms of the city include – things you can’t miss: The Market.   Colorful place with very friendly attendants willing to pose for a picture they will never see. In it you will find a bunch of seafood, which is a normal thing because of the location...

Seeking for Order

Image
They say order is good.  Today, I find it somehow inspiring. The need for a change, the sense that I might be a bit comfortable is not good, it is not letting me dream.  And oh, I miss the excitement of new experiences, of new challenges, of new people, new things to learn.  Thirst. Thirst for youth to last a bit more, for as long as my heart asks for more. In the upcoming days this page will suffer some changes.  Let us say, all my social media environment.  I need to renew.  If the challenges don’t come, I might somehow seek them. So, yes.  Let us put order.

Pérdida de la noción del tiempo

Image
I have looked every morning in the mirror and asked myself: If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today? And whenever the answer has been "No" for to...

Junio - Julio

Image

Discovering Central East Africa (Volume 3, Rwanda)

Image
The country with a thousand hills and million smiles... Not in vain have they called this country that way. Rwanda is a tiny piece of Africa, it is a place rich in nature, history and people with incredible needs. Intense questioning at the airport's migration area began my discovery of this (contradictorily) green but arid city (Kigali). Different than in many European or American countries, in theory developed places and (some) engaged with the "Save the Planet" slogans, Rwanda is a country with a very important recycling commitment (No plastic bags are allowed through the airport). A city tour that lasted less than 10 minutes, but that showed the safety of the American Embassy, the location of the humble UNICEF office (where my brother used to work), and important monument where - according to my brother - brides and grooms go to take wedding pictures at. My brother's place... In order to access the house there was a non asphalted road 1 , decorated with very few e...

Discovering Central East Africa (Volume 2)

Image
Africa is not all about empty lands, poor people, deserts, black kids going around asking for money, camels, elephants, or whatever those things you are thinking. But yes, you see many of those. In the past, present and posts to come I just wish to share my perspective on this trip and by no means meant to dispise the work/life of people/organization/city here mentioned. The reason to chose Kenya was because my brother had some friends living there. They work at United Nations , which happens to be the HQ for Africa. It made a huge impression on me the office they have there, it looked like a College Campus. Makes me wonder that if they claim to be a NGO, shouldnt they be using their funds for the causes they are working for? (UN stated aims are facilitating cooperation in international law, international security, economic development, social progress, human rights, and achievement of world peace) I mean it is ok to have comfortable offices, a comfotable restaurant, but what is the ne...
